Yesterday started out just like any other ordinary day. I went on a run that morning, went to school, and then had to grab some stuff from the store for one of my classes. But this "ordinary day" completely changed into something wonderful and humbling.
As I drove into the parking lot I passed a small elderly woman who was walking along the side of the road with her walker. She was such a sweet little thing, her back was hunched and she was dressed in a blue wool sweater (even though the sun was shining and it was quite warm out).
As I sat there after having just parked my car, I watched her for a moment longer and decided that I was going to ask her if she would like a ride home. I felt such compassion and love for this tender little soul that I had to do something for her. So I drove over to her and asked her if she would like a ride to wherever she was going. She gave me this adorable little smile and said, "That would be wonderful! I only have 3 blocks to go, but I am a little tired." I helped her into the car and put her walker in the trunk and we drove to her house, where I then helped her out of the car and into her driveway. She thanked me over and over again and then scooted slowly along the driveway to her back door. I waited until she was safely inside and then I left.
I don't know how to explain why, but this experience had such a dramatic effect on me. I could barely contain my tears as I drove away. I couldn't help but wonder, where is her family? Why aren't they helping her? Or taking care of her? Did she live by herself? Was she okay all on her own?
I felt such a love for this sweet lady, and I had only spent a few moments with her. I wanted to take care of her and make sure that she wanted for nothing. All the rest of the day I thought about how I should have given her my number and to not hesitate to let me know if she ever needed anything. Maybe I'll go back tomorrow and do that.
There really is no specific reason for this post and it might not even make sense. Mostly I have been thinking: Everyone deserves to be taken care of, and everyone deserves to be loved. So, whoever reads this, take some time to truly love those around you today--even if you don't even know them-- because it not only will change their life, but yours as well.
